Abstract

" An overview of naturalistic decision making applications" As a movement, Naturalistic Decision Making (NDM) emerged to describe what experienced people actually do when making decisions. NDM research attempts to describe how real decision makers act in real situations. This approach is often contrasted with more traditional research which focuses more on rational choice processes. It is only a short step for NDM to move from describing how people make decisions to determining how to help them make decisions better. This paper describes several reasons why NDM research should result in applications that will improve decision quality more than traditional approaches to decision making, and describes several areas for applying the findings of NDM research. These include decision-centered training of individuals, decision-centered training of teams, and decision-centered design of information management systems and human system interfaces. All of these applications have important implications for command and control and information management of joint task forces.
