"Naturalistic Decision Making In Command and Control" The field of Naturalistic Decision Making (NDM) has some of its roots in the military's need to better understand the human dimensions of command and control (C2). NDM research has investigated the cognitive processes that underlie how individuals actually make decisions and how they use their experience and training under demanding conditions. The research has resulted in a change in how psychologists, and ultimately commanders, view the process of decision making. The main goal of this paper is to specify the relationship between NDM and C2. The authors first assess the contributions and pitfalls of the classical approach in supporting the C2 decision making process and in providing guidance for training the commander. The authors also describe alternative approaches to the C2 challenge and show how the NDM approach supports a commander-centered definition of C2. The conclusions review the potential implications of this new framework in providing realistic solutions for the enhancements of command decision making performance through decision support and training.
