"Vision and Battalion Command" This paper discusses the commander's responsibility for developing and maintaining a vision of his unit's future. The author describes what a vision consists of, how it is developed and communicated, and how leaders can turn their visions into reality. Although the author uses examples drawn from his experiences in a battalion command, the benefits of developing and communicating a vision are equally relevant for larger organizations such as joint task forces performing an array of mission types including peace operations. In fact, a coherent vision of success may be even more important for large ad hoc organizations such as those employed in many modern coalitions. The coherent vision may be the glue that enables the various components of a coalition to work together effectively.
