Abstract

The authors attempt to create the groundwork for a description of leadership in the terms of organizational behavior. This they do by discussing the research to date on leadership and the models and aspects of theory arising from that research. They compare several case studies of industrial leadership with corresponding studies using military subjects. The authors create an integrated framework of characteristics and behaviors of leadership, and delineate relevant variables. From this, they structure a methodology and examine the results of four studies conducted using it. Their insights discriminate between combat/noncombat and drill/non-drill situations; Van Fleet and Yukl draw a number of conclusions concerning the relationship between leaders' styles and the performance of the groups they lead. The final portion of the book is a content analysis of biographies of ten senior military officers, conducted in terms of the behavior categories used in the previous methodology. Appendices include a listing of 136 incidents of cadet or active-duty officer leadership behaviors and a 175 page bibliography of military leadership.
