Abstract

This edition of what is probably one of the earliest treatises on strategy and principles of war contains an extensive introduction by the translator, including essays on the author, his society, warfare of his period, his influence on Mao Tse-tung, and textual analysis and history of the work itself. The text is interspersed with commentaries by various ancient authorities. There are four appendices (A Note on Wu Ch'i, Sun Tzu's Influence on Japanese Military Thought, Sun Tzu in Western Languages, Brief Biographies of the Commentators) and a bibliography.
