Abstract

This insightful article proposes, despite its title, not `the death of mission tactics..., but merely its dethronement.' Leonhard briefly sketches the development of `orders tactics' (the traditional practice of issuing complex and detailed orders to subordinates) and `mission tactics' (the newer practice of dispersing authority to subordinates, provided they employ it towards a specific mission). He then discusses the pitfalls of mission tactics and how it can be applied too sweepingly. He suggests that the revolution in sensors and communications technology have combined to produce a battlefield on which orders tactics can be employed, in some circumstances, more effectively than mission tactics.
