Abstract

This book serves as the report of a symposium sponsored by the US Army Institute for the Behavioral and Social Sciences held in 1983. The symposium examined the organizational, management, and leadership implications of the Army's plans for AirLand Battle 2000 and the ARMY 21. The resulting 18 papers (plus the editors' introduction) are collected into six topic areas: the battlefield, leadership and managerial behavior, organization for the future battlefield, systems-level leadership, current and future policy issues for army leaders, and a postscript. The battlefield section addresses issues of morale and stress, as well as leadership. The behavioral section compares results of the past with projections for the future. The organizational section deals mainly with design and research questions. The systems portion seeks to gain insights from systems, managerial, and corporate lessons learned. The policy issues section projects all these concerns (management, leadership, behavior) into the future. The postscript, one article by the editors and one by them and another author, consists of a contrasting view of the future battlefield and suggestions for a research agenda. There is a common (and quite exhaustive) list of references.
