Abstract

In this volume, Coakley attempts to give a practical overview of command and control for `the operational practitioner,' as General R. T. Herres, USAF (ret.) says in his introduction. Coakley begins with a `broad view of command and control,' then moves on to describe the processes and systems of C2, applicable technology, human and organizational aspects, goals (`An Impossible Dream: Information That Is Complete, True, and Up-to-Date'), a chapter on understanding the need for balanced decisions, and concludes with his estimation of how to use C2 in `fighting smart.' End notes and an index are included, but no bibliography. The author attempts to enliven his subject with cartoons, the extensive use of analogy, and a conscious attempt to employ learning from other disciplines. This effort is not wholly successful, but does make Command and Control for War and Peace somewhat more readable than many of its functional equivalents.
