Abstract

Allard presents no less than the history of command and control in the US Armed Services. Starting with the `roots of service autonomy' in the Continental Army and Navy, he examines the growth of the divided service structure, `the quest for unity,' and the development of the modern Departments and Joint Staff (from their inception in the post-World War II era through the Goldwater-Nicholls reforms). During this historical examination, Allard takes the time to present a number of C2 models and systems and to reflect on the effect of technology on C2. Allard constructs an excellent introduction to the world of joint C2 and the definitive single-volume history of US C2 development.
